Project Overview
The Green Line Extension expands electrified light rail service through two branches from Lechmere in Cambridge to Union Square in Somerville and College Avenue in Medford. With a budget cap of approximately $1.32 billion, the project encompasses two new Green Line branches featuring six stations, the relocation of 4.3 miles of commuter rail tracks, and updates to utilities and retaining walls. Additionally, it includes the construction of one mile of viaduct, several bridge replacements, noise barriers, and a new vehicle maintenance facility.
CHALLENGES
Our solution
SMK was engaged by the MBTA’s Project Team to support the design and construction of six MassDOT roadway bridges over the GL Medford Branch/NHML. To accommodate two new Green Line tracks, the span of these bridges was increased, widening the existing NHML corridor.
SMK served as the primary liaison between MassDOT and the GLX project, managing all project communications at MassDOT’s request. We ensured that all bridge work complied with MassDOT’s specifications, special provisions, and directives, using only qualified construction materials and approved fabricators. Our responsibilities included chairing weekly coordination meetings with MassDOT, ensuring the timely submission of shop drawings, calculations, product data, and fabrication notifications, as well as overseeing the MBTA’s Quality Oversight Subcontractor and Testing Agency. SMK also reviewed multiple types of submittals, including RFIs, DCNs, and NCRs.
Additionally, SMK is a key member of the project’s closeout team, organizing punch walks, coordinating attendees, collecting and vetting photographic punch items for accuracy, processing item closure in e-Builder, and coordinating Punch List Alignment meetings with the project team and the Design-Build Entity.
